Distant Island (cont'd)
But Christian Trask is quick to point
out that The Village of Distant Island is
not part of the New Urbanism movement
that’s currently sweeping the nation. These
“neo-traditional” neighborhoods generally
feature homes built very close together
on very small lots all joined together by
sidewalks. They tend to be long on neighborliness, but short on privacy. “We aren’t Newpoint, and we aren’t Habersham,” says Trask. “What we are is a planned neighborhood community in nature. Residents here enjoy a friendly, neighborly atmosphere, but without the density. You’ll definitely know your neighbors, but you won’t know what they’re watching on TV.” Indeed, the developers of Distant Island
place as great a value on Nature as on Neighborhood. According to Trask, no other community in northern Beaufort County affords its residents as much access to water. Every property owner on the island is able to enjoy the mile-long “waterfront stroll,” an easement along the water that will double in length by the time Phase Four comes together. Crabbing, shrimping and fishing are a way of life on the island, and access to the Intracoastal Waterway is quick and easy for boaters. All this, and you get to know your neighbors, too! Sound like the best of both worlds? There’s more. Despite its name, which goes back hundreds of years, Distant Island is actually closer to historic downtown Beaufort, with its great dining, arts and culture, than any of the other private residential islands off Hwy 21. Only four miles away, to be exact. And it’s even closer to the Lady’s Island business district, home to grocery stores, drug stores, dry cleaners and other essential conveniences. What a luxury to live amidst nature, in a setting reminiscent of a simpler, more peaceful time, without sacrificing the ease and activity of the modern world. Distant Island – so near, and yet so far away.
