The past is always present in historic downtown Beaufort. And nowhere is that presence more vivid than in the Old Commons neighborhood, where stands the lovely Miles Brewton Sams House.

Built around 1815 in the classic, T-shaped Beaufort style, the main house occupies a spacious half-acre – a rarity in downtown Beaufort – which also boasts a guest cottage, green house, croquet court, and garage/carriage house. Surrounded on three sides by beautiful old churches, the estate is bordered by a lush garden of cedars, azaleas, and a century-old pecan tree.

The current owner, a well-known art and antiques collector, lovingly restored the Sams House in the mid-1980s, rebuilding the double veranda porches and the living room chimney, which is constructed of 18,000 Savannah Grey bricks. Any hinges or boxlocks that are not original are correct period pieces.

There are two bedrooms and two and 1/2 baths in the 2,300 square foot main house. Guests enter through a gorgeous front door made of Brazilian mahogany, to find gleaming, original heart pine flooring throughout.

Near the kitchen, a charming breakfast nook with balcony overlooks the croquet court. A roomy library with built-in  bookshelves harkens back to a slower, more genteel era. Four fully-functional fireplaces add to the home’s gracious, hospitable atmosphere.

Built in 19820, the handsome, 600 square-foot cottage was relocated from another downtown location under threat of demolition. The owner has restored it to perfection on the foundation of the estate’s original cook’s house. The cottage is ideal for guests and would even make a great rental apartment. Along with a bedroom and bath, it features beautiful heart of pine flooring and walls, a brick fireplace and a full service kitchen.

The garage/carriage house can store two cars. Underneath the house is a space that could be enclosed as a wine cellar, which would be a perfectly appropriate addition to a home such as this one, where entertaining is a unparalleled pleasure!

For the past two decades, the Miles Brewton Sams House has served as an elegant, yet eclectic, backdrop for the owner’s celebrated collection of 18th and

19th Century American antiques. It has been photographed for many national publications, including Traditional Home, Decorating Magazine, and Cottage Style, and has even been videoed for segments on HGTV.
